![]() ![]() Team Meat has recently released the sequel to Super Meat Boy titled Super Meat Boy Forever, an auto-runner that unsurprisingly brings back the brutal difficulty of its predecessor. Resurrecting the platforming genre wasn't Super Meat Boy's only influence on the gaming industry though, as along with FromSoftware's Soulsborne franchise, it proved that gamers were growing tired of how simplistic games were becoming, as players loved the game's punishing difficulty that offered a rewarding challenge. ![]() RELATED: 10 Of The Hardest Shrines In Breath Of The Wild This resurgence is largely thanks to Team Meat's Super Meat Boy. Platformers struggled to compete in the industry for many years following, with Mariobeing one of the few AAA platforming franchises to continue thriving. Despite the eighth generation of consoles once again improving hardware, the platforming genre (particularly side-scrolling platformers) has had an impressive resurgence. Very sad to say the least. When the PlayStation 2 was released in 2000, the improved hardware meant that Sony began promoting realism-centric action games, instead of the platforming games that had dominated console gaming in the 90s. ![]() I will continue to play this to try and find some fun, but I just can't find my flow after 10 hours. This is clearly how project was designed but it's not fun. Everything in the boss fights seemed trial and error until you solve and memorise puzzle then it's just grind until done. I believe the number of levels is too large so quality control is not up to standard. It seems lazy to make the whole game hard. Sadly the designers made the early game way too hard. I have played other auto runners like Mario Run and bit trip runner that I enjoyed more. I never felt clever for completing the puzzles in the later worlds. Level chunks with checkpoints feel bizarre for meat boy and you just chip away until you compete a level. The trial and error required is far too great. I didn't enjoy the puzzle elements of level design. Like too much money thrown at something with an inherently weak or limited core. The whole product and presentation feels odd. The budget, time, animation, story, are all excessive and it doesn't feel like a small little team produced this anymore. But it should never have had a large dev time or many artists working towards it. As a simple autorunner in its early development, it could have been a fun spinoff. I believe it was a mistake to evolve this game so ambitiously. Forever's controls, while only 2 buttons, on paper look good for accessibility, end up feeling hollow. The base game had a perfect minimal control scheme that was very accessible. I admire Tommy for trying something new, but this game feels too reductive in it's control scheme. The base Sadly I didn't enjoy this at all. ![]() It is truly a remarkable feat of engineering and a monumental example of ignoring the limits of rational game design and production.
